Dear Editor,
The Province of Nova Scotia has made a great decision to ban cell phones in the classroom of our high schools. This is similar to several of our southern neighbour’s states. The New York Times recently covered this story, which included reference to a study that showed a decline in the mental health of our children since the introduction of the iPhone.
They should never have been allowed in the classroom in the first place. Not only a distraction from the lesson of the day, but the endless barrage of misinformation children are exposed to on a platform that becomes a stage where the pressure to conform to body image and gender standards creates this requirement to be “beautiful” or you are not valued as a person. This is the sad reality our children face at such a critical and formative stage in their growth toward defining themselves. This pressure is a large factor in the spectrum of mental health issues our children face today.
