Letter: Would she qualify for the pogey too?

February 24, 2021

Dear Editor,
Ever wonder why there is no money for things we need like roads, hospitals, schools, health care facilities, fire departments, etc.?
Justin Trudeau appointed Julie Payette as governor general without much, if any, consultation as to her background. Just because you were an astronaut may mean that you are intelligent; it does not mean you are competent or decent. Payette lasted a little over three years and now chose to resign over allegations of a toxic work place that she had created.
Once in the governor general position, they are guaranteed a pension of $150,000-plus a year for life, a $206,000 a year expense account with not much accountability. When does the common worker get this award for so little time worked?
I cannot see how long the members of government think this will continue when people are striving to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads, while some members of government keep showing the blatant disregard and extravagant entitlement, they seem to think they have earned.
The members of government should be working for us and for the good of the country. We should not have to work a lifetime paying for their few years of service or abuse.
So, the next time you hear from the government that there is no money for your area, just think of Julie Payette, Adrianne Clarkson, Mike Duffy, Pamela Whallin, the list goes on. We are now paying for five retired governor generals, countless senator expense accounts, to God knows what else. You do the math, while they argue what a worker’s minimum wage should be.
As the saying goes by John Dalberg Acton: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
