The Gillis brothers from Hawthorne held the hot reins at Inverness Raceway on Sunday.
Rodney and Danny Gillis each picked up a pair of wins in an exciting seven-dash card of live harness racing.
Danny Gillis was first to strike, taking race one with two-year-old filly Cougar On A Terr in a 2:03 trip. It was the second win in a row for the filly by Cougar Hall, owned by Walter Walker and Richard MacInnis.
Rodney Gillis answered the bell in race two with a 2:00.1 longshot win with D.F. Beaton’s Chase N Madi, paying $32 to win and keying an $83 quinella with fellow longshot Hughgetthecredit.
Rodney got his second win in race four in a gate-to-wire trip with Anthony Beaton’s Makes Me Stupid, pacing the mile in 2:01.4. Danny was a close second aboard Credit To Burn.
Danny evened the score in race six when he got a 29.2 second last quarter out of Cliff Drummond, coming from fourth place at the stretch to win in 2:00.1 for owner Evan Gillis.
Zach Mullins finally got the driving monkey off his back with a big first win of the season in Sunday’s feature.
Mullins made it five wins in a row for Intended Royalty, coming back from sixth at the half to chew up the field for a five-length win in 1:57.4 for owners Eddie and Randy Copley.
A clear favourite among the bettors, Intended Royalty still keyed a big $75 exactor and $227 triactor when Sandy MacNeil’s Dan Dar Mal and Kayla Habicht-Walker’s Euchred finished out of the money.
Elsewhere on the card, three-year-old colt Hippyjohn won its third straight for owner Colonel Smith with driver Campbell MacIsaac overtaking Zach Mullins and his new acquisition Wave That Banner on the stretch for a win in 2:00.1.
And Anthony Beaton had back-to-back wins as an owner on Sunday with Makes Me Stupid in the fourth and Buttons in the fifth. Joey Poirier led with Buttons from start to finish with a mile in 2:01.3.
With last Wednesday’s card cancelled due to a lack of horses, a large crowd was on hand Sunday, wagering $6,625 on the day.
