Inverness minor hockey scores with NHL First Shift

  June 9, 2021

Getting your child involved in hockey has never been made easier.
The Inverness Minor Hockey Association, in conjunction with the Cape Breton West MHA, has been awarded the National Hockey League’s First Shift Program.
First Shift is a program designed to introduce kids aged six to 10 who have never played hockey before.
For $229 the children are outfitted head-to-toe with Bauer equipment and will take part in six sessions at the Dr. Bernie MacLean Cultural and Recreation Centre in Inverness. The fee also includes insurance for the players.
After the sessions are over, players will have the opportunity to join a transition program held at the same time slot, or to join a minor hockey development team at a very reduced rate.
And for families who qualify, the cost of the program can be subsidized by either the KidSport program or through JumpStart.
The NHL/NHLPA First Shift is a program designed to ease kids and their families into the sport of hockey in a fun and friendly environment. They begin with a Welcome Event offering information and activities to help build kids’ confidence to make them and their parents more comfortable in the hockey environment.
The Welcome Event is their opportunity to welcome you into the hockey community. They will introduce kids and parents to the local program administrators, and coaches, provide an overview of the six-week program, and offer important information about proper fit and maintenance of equipment, as well as a demonstration on “how to get dressed.” After the 15-minute information session, each child is individually fitted for the equipment he/she will collect and take home – ready to start the first session.
All skaters are on the ice together at one time. However, the instructor/skater ratio of 1:4 ensures participants will be divided into small groups according to age and skating experience level.
During the six sessions, participants will move at their own pace, through fundamental skating and hockey skills. This allows kids time to build confidence and improve in order to experience a sense of achievement.
Registration begins next Tuesday, June 15, and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Inverness Minor Hockey is on Facebook, or a representative can be reached by email at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Also, you can go to the First Shift website at www.firstshift.ca and click on “locations” to register.
The sessions get underway on Monday, November 8, with a Welcome Event.
The program is based on fun, exercise, and getting involved in the sport. It is the perfect opportunity for families and players to join their hockey community.
