The Ecole NDA girl’s volleyball team dominated a weekend invitational tournament in Sydney.
“We won the gold medal,” said teacher-coach Gerry Cormier, whose team narrowly bested silver-medallists CBHA Huskies in the twelve-team tourney.
In the final game, the score was 25-20 and the second set was 25-22.
The MVP for NDA went to grade 10 student and left-side player Chloe Odo-hache, who stepped into a free spot, Cormier said.
“Definitely, with the experience that some of our players have, they controlled a lot of the play, especially Lilianne Cormier and Louise Aucoin.”
“It was an interesting pool on Friday night,” Cormier said.
“When we played against Nova, we split the set. They came the closest to us, but we eliminated them fairly early in the tournament.”
“We split again with Riverview - not as close, and then we won the split on Friday night.”
The tourney ran at Memorial High in Sydney Mines.
Some of the CBHA students and all the NDA team stayed overnight on Friday.
“It would have been more tiring to come home,” Cormier said.
“They had us play at eight o’clock in the morning.”
“We had a very long day. It’s almost miraculous that they were able to pull off a win on so little rest.”
Ashley Crowley, coach of the CBHA Huskies, said her team had “a bit of a slow start to the season, butthis weekend, the Huskies showed up to play.”
“We’re looking forward to a competitive regional tournament.”
