The Around the River 5-miler attracted some familiar names from the running community on Saturday as it attempts to gain some momentum as one of the must-run races of the summer.
The picturesque course crosses the Margaree River twice and winds its way over rolling hills from the Cranton Crossroads Community Centre in Margaree Centre through Margaree Valley. And unlike last year’s hot and humid race, this year’s event was held under ideal conditions with just enough breeze to keep down the bugs which are known to take steroids in Margaree.
Elite runner Alexander MacLeod gave the North East Margaree Firemen’s Day race a new benchmark time of 32 minutes and 20 seconds.
Last year’s winner and a mainstay of all local races, Charlie LeFort, followed MacLeod in with a time of 32:42.
Rounding out the men’s division: Garrett Rivers, 35:43; Johan Magnholt, 39:39; and Amish Morrell, 41:32.
Meanwhile, elite runner Crystal Garrett set a new women’s division time of 34:50 and finished third overall.
Cystal and Alexander’s daughter, Evelyn MacLeod, was second among the women with a time of 42:14.
The remaining women to cross the finish line were: Eilidh Ross, 44:36; Corrina Tattrie, 49:43; and Sharon Ann Burchell with a personal best time of 61:55.
There were two age groups in the fun run. In the over-10 category, Mason Carmichael, Frances MacLeod and Mya Hart competed.
And in the under-7 group, the participants included: Graeme Hart, Emmett Carmichael, Lily Carmichael, Mark Hart, Lila Hart, and Elliana MacIsaac.
